Why every SEO strategy starts with an audit

When a client comes to me, the first thing I do isn't write content or research keywords. I run an SEO audit. It's the step that decides everything that follows, so I never skip it.

What is an SEO audit, and why do I start there?

An SEO audit is a complete diagnosis of your website: how Google sees it, how a visitor navigates it, and what's holding it back from ranking better.

Without that diagnosis, any strategy is guesswork. You can have the best content in the world, but if your site has indexing or speed problems, Google won't even show it.

What I actually review in that first audit

In order, I review:

  • Indexing and crawling — whether Google can find and read your pages
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals — how long your site takes to load
  • Structure and architecture — how your pages are organized relative to each other
  • Technical SEO — structured data (schema), tags, basic configuration
  • Content and keywords — how well your site answers what your ideal client is searching for
  • User experience — how easy your site is to navigate on mobile
  • AI visibility — how your site shows up (or doesn't) in answers from tools like ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews

How this helps you rank

Every audit finding becomes a concrete action. It's not a report that sits unread: it's the map that tells me what to fix first so you start appearing where your clients are looking.

That's why, when I hand you an audit, I'm not just handing you problems. I'm handing you priorities.

What comes after the audit

With a clear diagnosis, the next step is keyword research and content strategy — but that's for the next article.
